About

Welcome to the website of the Llandudno Coastal Forum.

This website will be used to share information, encourage debate, and share opinions that can be brought to the Forum for discussion.

The Forum intends to be as transparent, and inclusive as possible. The members are just the voice of the different groups, and residents within Llandudno, and the many people who visit the town.

History

The Llandudno Coastal Forum was set up in response to the public outcry following the sea defence improvement works that took place on Llandudno’s North Shore beach in 2014.

Following a public meeting, the people of Llandudno were promised a voice in the future development of the Town’s Beaches / Sea Defences. This was ratified at the Conwy County Borough Council Cabinet Committee meeting on the 8th July 2014.

At this meeting, it was agreed that a forum be set up to discuss options for the Town’s beaches / Sea Defences, with a six month timescale before the chosen options would progress to a feasibility study.

At the first meeting of the Llandudno Coastal Forum, the following terms of reference were agreed:

That the Forum would work together to:

“Develop a Sustainable Beach Management strategy for Llandudno, which seeks to;

· provide beaches that are fit for purpose;

· provide appropriate flood, and coastal erosion risk management;

· improve the natural environment, cultural heritage, recreational space, and aesthetics;

· create opportunities for commercial activities for the town”.

As the work of the Forum progresses, there will be opportunities to interact with this site, to add your opinions, and to join in discussions. Minutes and Agendas of meetings will appear in the appropriate sections, and ideas, plans, and details of events will be published.

Please keep checking back here for updates, and join us on our social media sites for news, and further information.

    I am just at least a forth generation local of Llandudno who walks regularly along the prom and to Deganwy along the West shore. I am however during my walks Saddened and let down by the people I elected to look after local interests. You can no longer call Llandudno a holiday resort, the beach looking more like a tipping point for quarry stone, the entrance to the pier derelict, coastal path to happy valley not walkable, Public gardens full of weeds and run down, no. Cinema or entertainment during the evenings. It is now more a town for shopping and a stopping point to sight see else where along Wales. To add to my dismay I have just read work on West Shore has stated with Beach material !!!!!!!!!! If a local can see these horrors I am sure holiday makers can too and gone will be the days when visitors to the town come back year after year because Llandudno is so beautiful ????? A comment I have heard often over the last 30 years. But increasingly I now here comments on how run down the town is becoming and the majority of comments stem from the state of the stone and boulder beach relaying a negative image of the whole town.

  2. Mark Woodall says:

    First they build the off shore wind farm, which in itself spoilt the vista off the North Shore. Then they decide to put those awful boulders on the beach citing flood protection and ruin what beach was left.
    Do those in power not realise that this town relies heavily on tourism to sustain the residents off peak , and that they are slowly ruining Llandudno as a holiday resort for families.
    The beach should be reinstated ASAP, the boulders removed and recycled away from either shore and once this is completed the town is advertised nationally as a beach holiday resort in North Wales.

  3. Lynn stringer says:

    If there has never been any serious flooding on North shore,what was the point of all the rocks,
    If groins had worked for many many years , was it not a better choice just to keep up the maintenance of them rather than destroy a once beautiful beach.
    Was there never any thought given as to the effect it would have on tourism on wich so many depend. I thin reinstating the groins would be the way forward to reinstate ourbbeach

    At last we are getting a look at what could happen to our beloved North and West shores .
    Having look at the ideas put forward I would like to see traditional Groynes and Shingle beach as put forward in idea 3 for the North shore.
    Not to sure on the zoning idea but it could work.
    The idea of any breakwaters is interesting as to how high they would need to be as not to become submerged at high tides .Also the back wash from the tides as they go out and in needs to be studied to see how much of the sand etc would be removed.
    The improvement of the Craig-y-don paddling pool area is much welcomed however the extra sea pools could present a problem of safety for small children if left unsupervised .
    Hopefully an upgrade to will happen at the West shore pool ,with an increase in facilities for family’s there as well.
    It is encourage to see the ideas been put forward , as usual it all comes down to money and funds available so any idea when we might see improvements . The Costal beaches will always
    need to be maintained so lets just hope we get it right this time around , so we won’t have to pay out again. Shame we let the old Groynes fade away isn’t it.

    Is it just me missing comments by our elected councillors but I have not seen one press statement saying what a stupid decisionI was to cover the beach I stones . Or is it because they all agreed with it and stay silent as usual as might lose votes at election time . Every councillior should hang there head in shame for the mess they made to our beach

  6. John Alwyn-Jones says:

    Perhaps i am being a tad stupid, but where is the consultation process on line for those of us that cannot be in Llandudno? Where can we see what is being proposed?

    1. John says:

      Will be online as soon as the public exhibition ends and will be available for 28 days.

  7. Debbie Silcock says:

    love the Prom and ‘beach’ at Craig-y-Don, but would love for there to be more sand. Walk down there everyday.

    They said the stones had gone since 2003. Gone were? (All over the beach) in stead of buying a million pounds worth of stone why wasn’t it just recovered from the beach then we still might have some beach left !

  10. swindells says:

    Was the new slipway designed before the beach level was topped up ? (How much is it going to cost to keep to keep removing the stones from the slipway?) The new slip way is lower than the beach level so every time we get a bit of swell it’s going to get covered in stones someone dropped
    a booboo

  11. John Evans says:

    Just found this sight will follow with interest good luck hope we get a result to this mess

  12. Delyth Shotter says:

    Look forward to read the next installment. Good luck everyone
