Have Your Say on Future Beach Management in Llandudno
Online Consultation Feedback is now closed
What is the Current Situation?
Coastal flooding has long been a problem for Llandudno. The most recent severe coastal flooding in Llandudno affected Craig y Don in 1990. The present day coastal defences are based on management of beach levels to cause waves to break before reaching the aging concrete steps. Conwy County Borough Council are responsible for maintaining coastal defences through their powers as a maritime district council.
At West Shore the coast protection scheme of the early 1990’s uses a range of beach material with shore connected breakwaters to regulate beach movement. This scheme has required minimal ongoing beach management although there are wind-blown sand issues due to the healthy beach levels.
At North Shore the 1996 and 2000 coast protection schemes were carried out on the basis that similar control structures were not publicly acceptable. The beach material used is therefore necessarily larger to minimise beach movement. Despite this regular beach management is required and in recent years additional shingle has been imported to maintain adequate protection.
Who is the Llandudno Coastal Forum?
Llandudno Coastal Forum was set up in response to public concerns to the large scale shingle replenishment works carried out in spring 2014 at North Shore as a consequence of beach losses caused by the winter 2013/14 storms.
The Cabinet within Conwy County Borough Council approved the recommendation to create a forum of stakeholders to discuss options for future beach management. The forum was given a 6 month timescale to identify alternative management proposals to be taken forward for additional study.
Why is Llandudno Coastal Forum holding this consultation?
A number of potential beach management concepts are being developed by the Llandudno Coastal Forum during its initial 6 month mandate. Many of these concepts would require further work to identify the most sustainable and cost effective scheme in order to apply for funding. We are therefore seeking public opinion on which concepts have the strongest support to take forwards to the next stage.
