Press Release 27th November 2014

Begins
Following the public meeting on the 20th May 2014 to discuss the problems associated with the Llandudno
North Shore it was agreed to set up a forum to discuss the problems and identify some solution suitable to
all parties.
The Llandudno Coastal Forum (LCF) was set up with representatives of interested groups including the Town
Council, Conwy County Borough Council and Restore Our Beach group together with local interest groups.
The first meeting was held on the 12th August and the group have subsequently met every other Thursday.
The group have had detailed discussions on matters affecting the North shore including the following
subjects:
• Removal of Stones
• Elevated sandy beach and the effect of movement of the sand
• Installation of groynes and locations if groynes are to be installed
• The use of alternative materials in the construction of the groynes including recycled plastic
• Access points to be installed to the beach as the two slipways are the only ways of accessing the
beach
• Large concrete groyne to be used as landing stage to replace existing wooden landing stages for
pleasure craft
• Installation of new toilets facilities on the promenade
• Impact of new Lifeboat Station and potential regeneration of paddling pool area
• Welsh Governments definition for Sea Defence / Coast Protection for receiving financial support
• Destination funding from European Regional Development Fund
As a result of this exhaustive process a draft plan is currently being prepared that includes sectioning into
the beach into different activity areas:
• Pier to Venue Cymru: holiday makers sandy beach
• Venue Cymru to Craig y Don: Boating area
• The remaining area to be left as a Fisherman’s area.
LCF are currently finalising their proposal and hope to have a development plan for the North Shore which
they hope will be available for public consultation early in the New Year.

  1. John Alwyn-Jones says:

The issues that are not being addressed by the Forum or anyone elses is whether the Council has he been negligent or not, did they secure all the required approvals, did they undertake the required consultation, did they employ the best qualified consultants, did they undertake the required environmental assessments, did they undertake the required feasibility studies – all questions I have asked all 59 councillors with very few responding! Interesting … and I wonder why they do not respond or answer the questions I have asked? I do not think it unreasonable to begin to conclude that there may be a cover up going on here – if not then the Councillors would answer the questions I have asked without fear or trepidation.

  2. June Evans says:

We have been visitingwestwest shore for 50 years . Please don’t change it

  3. Phil Northam says:

In my 60 years experience of Llandudno beach it has never been particularly sandy (except at low tide). It is normally a shingle beach and that’s what it should remain. Remove the large cobbles (perhaps to use on the West Shore protection) and replace with 6 inch shingle. Don’t get rid of the wooden slipway , concrete slipways are dangerous in waves.

  4. Tony Baker says:

At the time of the debate on cycling on the prom CCBC stated that the prom and foreshore were owned by Mostyn Estates. My question is what part if any are Mostyn Estates playing in the coastal forum. If as CCBC says Mostyn Estates does own the prom and foreshore then should they not be picking up the bill for sea defenses.

  5. Alastair Facer says:

This is typical of local government. They hope by stalling discussions with endless committees and waffle the problem they have caused will lose momentum. Well it won’t go away because the destruction caused is plain for all to see. A constant reminder. The big question is who did an up to date feasibility study? Did anyone and where is the evidence that it was done? Not seen one yet. Were local business, residents consulted. Not seen one yet. I do not live in the town anymore but was born, there and proud of it. This just makes me want to cry. Something needs doing to save the jewel in the crown our beach.

    1. John says:

Alastair, The forum is gathering ideas from representatives of the town including businesses and tourism. At the end of the process in late January the findings will go to the town for consultation and then a feasibility study to look at all the options will be ordered.
